Bob Zahn Cartoons
By Dan Rosandich of Cartoon Services
Illustrating greeting cards may seem like a difficult task in the beginning. Especially for a struggling cartoon artist who has no sense of where to start or how to begin creating work that can be offered to greeting card publishers. Bob Zahn has had an intuitive nature for creating rough sketches and showing them to various humor card companies across the United States and Canada. Zahn's work eventually found it's way onto the covers of tens of thousands of greeting cards published by such notable card publishers as Amberley Greetings and Noble Works. Simply put, the cartoonist created rough sketches over a "dummy" card or a mock up piece of paper, folded in half, to resemble what an actual printed finish would look like....and accompanied with text that was concieved and hand written on the right-inside part of the "dummy" sample. Zahn suggested that beginning or "would-be" hopefuls, send 15 to 25 rough layouts, and mail them to a card publisher for their consideration. Of course, if the artist wants his sample roughs returned, it is a very good idea to include a S.A.S.E. which stands for self addressed stamped envelope. Aside from being a prolific greeting card illustrator, a cartoonist can enhance his or her income by offering their services on a professional basis for various uses such as article illustrator, caricaturist, animator, book designer, gag panel cartoonist, comic book illustrator / artist and many other avenues in which to offer one's services. Bob Zahn hasalso been published in many top of the line family magazines such as Saturday Evening Post, good Housekeeping and Reader's Digest. Zahn offers his images to professionals who might want to use them in their projects which range from books to newsletters.
